Splash Potion of Swiftness Recipe Guide

Learn how to brew a Splash Potion of Swiftness in Minecraft. Full crafting guide with step-by-step instructions and version compatibility.

How to Craft a Splash Potion of Swiftness

A Splash Potion of Swiftness gives you a Speed II boost for 1 minute 30 seconds in Java Edition (or 1 minute 7 seconds in Bedrock). It’s one of the fastest ways to get around when you throw it at yourself or another player. Let’s go over how to make one.

What You’ll Need

To make a Splash Potion of Swiftness, you only need two things:

  • 1 Potion of Swiftness (the regular kind, not splash yet)
  • 1 Gunpowder

That’s it. The potion itself is brewed separately, but once you have it, turning it into a splash potion is quick.

Crafting Steps

1. Open Your Brewing Stand

Place your brewing stand and open it. You should see the brewing interface with slots for fuel, ingredients, and three bottles.

2. Add Blaze Powder

Put blaze powder in the fuel slot on the left side. You need this to activate the brewing stand. One powder will run through one brewing cycle.

3. Add Your Potion

Put your Potion of Swiftness (1:30 or Speed II) in one of the three bottle slots at the bottom.

4. Add Gunpowder

Put gunpowder in the ingredient slot at the top. The brewing process starts automatically.

5. Wait for It to Brew

You’ll hear a “glug glug glug” sound when it’s done. The gunpowder disappears and you get your Splash Potion of Swiftness.

Using Your Splash Potion

Once you have it, just throw the potion where you want the effect. It’ll break on impact and give everyone nearby a Speed II boost. Hit yourself with it to zoom around, or hit mobs for fun. The effect lasts a decent chunk of time, so it’s great for getting out of danger or catching up to something.

Game Commands

If you want to grab one instantly, use these commands depending on your version.

Minecraft 1.13 and Higher

/give @p splash_potion{Potion:"minecraft:strong_swiftness"} 1

Minecraft 1.9 to 1.12

/give @p splash_potion 1 0 {Potion:"minecraft:strong_swiftness"}

Minecraft 1.8

/give @p potion 1 16418

Creative Mode

If you’re in Creative, you can just grab it from the inventory. In older versions (1.8-1.19), it’s in the Brewing tab. In newer versions (1.19.3+), check Food and Drinks.

Version Differences

Java Edition lasts 1 minute 30 seconds. Bedrock and other versions last 1 minute 7 seconds. The effect is the same either way, just a bit shorter on console and mobile.

What to Make Next

You can turn your splash potion into a Lingering Potion if you throw it through dragon’s breath. Lingering potions stick around as a cloud, which is useful for traps or defending an area.
