What version of Minecraft does this map need?

It's made for 1.12.2 specifically. Using a different version will break the map, so stick with 1.12.2.

Can I play this with my friends?

Yes. Upload the map folder to your server's world directory and you can play it together. It works in both single-player and multiplayer.

How do I install the custom resource pack that comes with it?

The resource pack should be included in the download. Put the pack file in your resourcepacks folder and select it in Options. Adventure Mode will load it automatically when you play the map.

What's the deal with the render distance setting?

Set it to 12 or higher so you can see all the visual effects and animations properly. The map was designed with that in mind.
