What Are Feathers in Minecraft?
Feathers are items you get from killing chickens in Minecraft. You can’t craft them, so you need to hunt them down. They’re useful for making arrows and books with quills, so it’s worth grabbing a few.
Finding Feathers in Creative Mode
In Creative mode, you can grab feathers from the inventory menu. Here’s where to look depending on your version:
| Version | Menu Location |
|---|---|
| 1.8 to 1.11 | Materials |
| 1.12 to 1.19 | Miscellaneous |
| 1.19.3+ | Ingredients |
How to Get Feathers in Survival Mode
The only way to get feathers in Survival is by killing chickens. Here’s how:
Step 1: Find a Chicken
Chickens are common in almost every Overworld biome. Just walk around on grass and you’ll find one pretty quickly. They’re the red and white bird-looking mobs.
Step 2: Kill the Chicken
Hit the chicken until it dies. It’ll turn pink as it takes damage. Keep attacking until it drops. When it dies, you’ll get raw chicken and hopefully a feather. Drop rates aren’t guaranteed, so you might need to kill a few chickens to get what you want.
Step 3: Grab Your Loot
Pick up the feather and raw chicken before they disappear. Both are useful items to keep around.
