Minecraft 1.9 is the Combat Update for Java Edition. This major release completely overhauls how fighting works in the game, making PvP more strategic and skill-based. On top of that, you get a huge expansion to The End dimension, new items, new mobs, and tons of quality-of-life improvements.

Combat System Overhaul

The biggest change in 1.9 is the combat. Every weapon now has an attack cool-down, so mashing the mouse button doesn’t work anymore. Timing your attacks matters. Swords have a sweep attack that hits multiple mobs in range, and axes deal a crushing blow with increased damage. Shields are a new defensive tool you hold in your off-hand to block incoming damage.

You can now dual wield items too. Press F to swap what’s in your main and off-hand. This opens up tons of new strategies for both PvP and PvE.

The End Dimension Expansion

The End got completely redesigned. It’s way bigger now with more islands to explore. New blocks include Purpur blocks, End Rods, and dragon head blocks. You’ll find Chorus plants growing around the dimension. Best part: you can summon the Ender Dragon again for another fight.

Flying

Elytra wings let you glide through the air. Find them in The End and use them to soar off mountains or from the tops of cliffs.

Arrows and Enchantments

Tipped arrows let you apply potion effects with arrows
Spectral arrows make mobs glow so you can see them through walls
Frost Walker enchantment freezes water as you walk on it

Beetroot crops (brought over from Pocket Edition)
