Blaze powder is one of the most useful crafting ingredients in Minecraft. You need it for brewing potions, making eyes of ender, and crafting magma cream. The good news is it’s super easy to make once you get your hands on a blaze rod.
What You Need
To craft blaze powder, you only need one thing:
- 1 Blaze Rod (dropped by blazes when they die)
That’s it. Each blaze rod crafts into 2 blaze powder, which is why this recipe is so efficient.
How to Craft Blaze Powder
Step 1: Get Your Blaze Rod
Kill a blaze in the Nether and grab the rod it drops. If you haven’t found the Nether fortress yet, you’ll need to go through a Nether portal first.
Step 2: Open Your Crafting Table
Grab a crafting table or any block you can use to craft. You’ll see the 3×3 crafting grid.
Step 3: Place the Blaze Rod
Put the blaze rod anywhere in the crafting grid. It doesn’t matter which slot you use. After you place it, you’ll immediately see 2 blaze powder appear in the result slot.
Step 4: Take Your Powder
Click the blaze powder and drag it to your inventory. Done.
Finding Blaze Powder in Creative Mode
If you’re in Creative mode, blaze powder is in the Brewing tab (Java 1.8-1.19) or in Ingredients (Java 1.19.3+). Just search for it or scroll through the menu.

What to Make with Blaze Powder
Blaze powder is an ingredient for several important items:
- Eyes of Ender – used to locate strongholds
- Magma Cream – protects you from fire and lets you cross lava
- Potions of Strength – gives you a damage boost
- Fire Charges – launches fireballs like a ghast
You’ll use a ton of blaze powder if you’re serious about brewing potions. Stock up whenever you raid a nether fortress.

Blaze powder has been craftable the same way since Minecraft’s early days. It works the same in Java Edition 1.8 through 1.20 and all newer versions.
