What is a Sunflower?
Sunflowers are tall yellow flowers you can find growing naturally around Minecraft. They’re decoration blocks that spawn in sunflower plains biomes. You can’t craft them at a crafting table or furnace. Instead, you find them in the world and break them to pick them up.
Where to Find Sunflowers
In Creative Mode
Sunflowers appear in the creative inventory. Here’s where to find them by version:

In Survival Mode
Sunflowers naturally spawn in sunflower plains biomes. Search for these biomes when exploring, and you’ll find them growing in clusters. They’re bright yellow and hard to miss.
How to Break and Collect Sunflowers
Once you find a sunflower, here’s how to collect it depending on your platform:
- Java Edition (PC/Mac): Left click and hold on the flower
- Pocket Edition (PE): Tap and hold on the flower
- Xbox 360 / Xbox One: Press and hold RT on the controller
- PS3 / PS4: Press and hold R2 on the controller
- Wii U: Press and hold ZR on the gamepad
- Nintendo Switch: Press and hold ZR on the controller
- Windows 10 Edition: Left click and hold on the flower
- Education Edition: Left click and hold on the flower
The sunflower will break and drop as a small item on the ground. Pick it up before it disappears (it will despawn after 5 minutes if you don’t grab it).

- Yellow Dye: Break a sunflower to get yellow dye. Useful for crafting and coloring blocks

- Potted Plants: Place a sunflower in a flower pot for decoration
- Bee Breeding: Bees are attracted to flowers including sunflowers. Use them to breed bees and set up bee farms
- Composting: Throw sunflowers in a composter to add compost levels
- Decoration: Plant sunflowers around your base to make it look better
