Soul Soil is a common block found in the Nether. It’s mainly used as a decorative block and can be used to craft soul torches and soul campfires. You can’t make it with a crafting table – you have to find it.
Where to Find Soul Soil in Minecraft
Soul Soil generates naturally in the Soul Sand Valley biome of the Nether. The Soul Sand Valley is pretty easy to spot with its dark, gloomy appearance and lots of soul sand blocks spread around.
Quick tip: If you’re having trouble seeing in the Nether, drink a Potion of Night Vision to make it easier to spot soul soil blocks.
How to Get Soul Soil in Survival Mode
Step 1: Find the Nether and Head to Soul Sand Valley
Soul Soil only spawns in the Nether dimension. Build a Nether portal and travel to the Soul Sand Valley. Once you’re there, you’ll find soul soil blocks scattered throughout the biome. They look similar to soul sand but have a slightly different texture.
Step 2: Mine the Soul Soil
You can break soul soil with your bare hand or any tool. Here’s how depending on your platform:
- Java Edition (PC/Mac): Left click and hold on the block
- Pocket Edition (PE): Tap and hold on the block
- Xbox One: Press and hold RT
- PlayStation 4: Press and hold R2
- Nintendo Switch: Press and hold ZR
- Windows 10 Edition: Left click and hold
Keep holding until the block breaks. A soul soil item will drop on the ground.
Step 3: Pick It Up
Grab the soul soil before it disappears. It’ll go straight into your inventory.
Soul Soil in Creative Mode
If you just want soul soil in Creative, it’s in the Building Blocks tab (or Natural Blocks for versions 1.19.3 and newer).
