Slow Falling Status Effect Guide | Minecraft 1.13+

Learn how to get and use Slow Falling in Minecraft. Potion recipes, commands, duration, and where to find this useful status effect.

What is Slow Falling?

Slow Falling is a status effect that makes you fall slowly and completely removes fall damage. It’s super useful when you’re dropping from high places or want to descend without taking damage. You can get multiple levels of it (Slow Falling II, III, IV, etc.) but they all work the same way.

How to Get Slow Falling

There are several ways to apply this effect to yourself or other players:

Potions

The easiest way is to drink potions. You can use regular Potions of Slow Falling, Splash Potions if you want to give it to someone else, or Lingering Potions to create a cloud effect.

Arrows

If you have tipped arrows, you can shoot them to apply the effect to whoever gets hit. Arrows of Slow Falling work the same way.

Commands

Use the /effect command to apply Slow Falling instantly. This is the fastest way if you’re in Creative mode or have cheats enabled.

Potion Recipes

To make a Potion of Slow Falling, you need:

  • Awkward Potion
  • Phantom Membrane

Brew these together in a brewing stand and you’ll get a Potion of Slow Falling. Different base potions give different durations. Extended versions (made with Redstone) last longer, while powered versions (made with Glowstone) are shorter but stronger.

How Long Does It Last?

Duration depends on the type of potion or arrow you use:

  • Arrow of Slow Falling: 11 or 30 seconds
  • Potion of Slow Falling: 1:30 or 4:00 minutes
  • Splash Potion: 1:30 or 4:00 minutes
  • Lingering Potion: 22 seconds or 1:00 minute

You can check how much time is left by opening your inventory and looking at the effect list in the top right.

What It Looks Like

When you have Slow Falling active, you’ll see a small icon appear in the top right corner of your screen. You’ll also get greenish-blue particle effects floating around you. When the effect wears off, both disappear and you’re back to normal falling speed.

Maximum Level (255):
