About Rib Armor Trim
Rib Armor Trim is an item added in Minecraft 1.20 that lets you customize how your armor looks. It’s a smithing template, so you’ll need to use it at a Smithing Table with armor and copper. There are 16 different armor trim patterns in the game, and Rib is one of them.
How to Get It in Survival Mode
You can’t craft this item. Instead, you need to find it in the world. Here’s where to look.
Finding It in Nether Fortresses
Rib Armor Trim spawns in chests inside Nether Fortresses. To find one:
- Go to the Nether (build a nether portal or use an existing one)
- Look for a Nether Fortress. They’re giant structures made of nether bricks. You can use
/locate structure nether_fortressto find one quickly - Search through chests in the fortress until you find Rib Armor Trim. Most fortresses have multiple chests, so check them all
- If you don’t find it, try another fortress
Creative Mode Location
In Creative Mode for Java Edition 1.20, you’ll find Rib Armor Trim in the Ingredients tab of the Creative Inventory.

Item ID and Name
The Minecraft ID for Rib Armor Trim is rib_armor_trim_smithing_template. It stacks up to 64 in your inventory.
Give Command
To give yourself Rib Armor Trim in Java Edition 1.20, use this command:
/give @p rib_armor_trim_smithing_template 1
How to Use It
Once you have Rib Armor Trim, bring it to a Smithing Table along with:
- The armor piece you want to customize (helmet, chestplate, leggings, or boots)
- A copper block of any color (copper, exposed copper, weathered copper, or oxidized copper)
The Smithing Table will apply the rib pattern to your armor. Different metals change the color of the trim. Experiment to find the look you want.
