Protection Enchantment Guide | Minecraft

Learn how to use the Protection enchantment in Minecraft. Covers all levels, compatible armor, incompatible enchantments, and commands.

What is Protection?

Protection is one of the most useful enchantments in Minecraft. It reduces all damage you take from attacks, fire, lava, explosions, and falling. It works on any armor piece and stacks with other armor you’re wearing.

Unlike specific damage protection enchantments like Fire Protection or Blast Protection, Protection gives you defense against everything at once. The tradeoff is that it’s less effective per level than the specialized versions, but the versatility makes it worth using.

Protection Levels

Protection goes from Level 1 to Level 4 (Protection I through Protection IV). Each level reduces damage by a percentage of your total armor protection. The higher the level, the better the damage reduction.

How to Get Protection

You can add Protection to armor in three ways:

  • Enchanting Table: Place an armor piece in the table and hope for Protection in the available enchantments
  • Anvil: Combine enchanted books with armor pieces
  • Command: Use /enchant @p protection [level] for the exact version you want

What You Can Enchant

Protection works on all four armor pieces:

  • Helmets
  • Chestplates
  • Leggings
  • Boots

Any material works: leather, chain, iron, diamond, golden, netherite, and turtle shells. You can also enchant enchanted books with Protection to use on an anvil later.

Incompatible Enchantments

Protection can’t be combined with these enchantments on the same piece of armor:

  • Blast Protection
  • Fire Protection
  • Projectile Protection

This makes sense since those are specialized versions that serve the same purpose. You have to pick one approach per armor piece.

Wearing Your Enchanted Armor

Once you have armor with Protection, just put it on. Move each piece to your armor slots and you’ll immediately get the protection bonus. The more pieces you have enchanted, the more total protection you get.
