Phantom membranes are useful items in Minecraft that you can only get by killing phantoms. You can’t craft them or find them naturally, so you’ll need to hunt down these flying mobs if you want to collect them.
How to Get Phantom Membrane in Survival Mode
What You Need to Know About Phantoms
Phantoms spawn at night when you haven’t slept for a few days. They’re flying mobs that circle above your head and make distinctive shrieking sounds. If you keep playing without sleeping, they’ll start attacking you. The good news is they only appear at night, so they’ll burn up when the sun rises.
Killing a Phantom for Membrane
When a phantom dives at you, that’s your chance to attack. Hit it while it’s coming down on you. The phantom will turn pink as it takes damage. Keep attacking whenever it dives and eventually it’ll die. When it does, it may drop a phantom membrane. The drop rate isn’t 100%, so if you don’t get one, find another phantom and try again.
Pick up the membrane quickly before it disappears. You’ll want to keep these in your inventory for later.

What to Make With Phantom Membranes
Phantom membranes have a couple of solid uses:
- Potion of Slow Falling – Brew phantom membrane with awkward potions to make slow falling potions. These let you fall without taking damage and descend slowly.
- Repair Elytra – Use phantom membranes in a crafting grid with a damaged elytra to repair it. This is the main way to fix your elytra wings.
The slow falling potion is super useful for exploration and getting down from high places safely. The elytra repair is essential if you use wings regularly.
