Nether Wastes Biome
The Nether Wastes is the original Nether biome. Before the Nether Update, this is what the entire dimension looked like. Now it’s just one of several biomes you’ll find when you head through a Nether portal. If you’re exploring the Nether, you’ll spend most of your time here.
What You’ll Find Here
The Nether Wastes is pretty much what you’d expect from hell. There’s a ton of lava, fire, and dark blocks everywhere. The terrain is rough and uneven, with large lava pools scattered around. You won’t find any trees or normal plants here, but there are some unique plants you can use.
Vegetation
Even though it’s a wasteland, there are actually useful plants in the Nether Wastes:
- Brown Mushrooms – Use these to grow huge mushrooms or craft potions
- Red Mushrooms – Same uses as brown mushrooms, just different color
- Nether Warts – Essential for brewing potions, grows on soul sand
Blocks and Materials
You’ll find some valuable materials here if you know where to look:
- Netherrack – The main block here, burns forever if you light it on fire
- Nether Quartz Ore – Mine this with any pickaxe to get nether quartz
- Glowstone – Found on the ceiling, good light source but watch for fire
- Lava – Everywhere, useful for some builds and brewing
Mobs
The Nether Wastes is dangerous. You’ll run into:
- Blazes – Shoot fireballs, drop blaze rods (needed for the End)
- Ghasts – Huge floating ghosts that shoot fireballs, annoying in caves
- Zombified Piglins – Won’t attack unless you hit them or mine gold, they can swarm fast
- Hoglins – Aggressive boar-like mobs that charge at you
Nether Fortresses
This is the big one. Nether Fortresses spawn in the Nether Wastes and they’re loaded with loot. You’ll find chests containing rare items you can’t craft:
- Horse Armor
- Saddles
- Name Tags
- Diamonds
- Books with enchantments
Fortresses are also where you find Blazes, which you need to fight the Ender Dragon. They’re essential for progression if you’re trying to beat the game.
Survival Tips
- Bring a Potion of Fire Resistance – Makes lava way less scary and saves you from fire damage
- Bring a Potion of Night Vision – The Nether is dark and gloomy, night vision helps a lot
- Don’t Dig Straight Down – You’ll fall in lava and lose everything
- Bring a Pickaxe – You’ll want to mine quartz and glowstone
- Be Careful With Piglins – Don’t hit them or mine gold nearby unless you’re ready for a fight

If you need the biome ID for commands like /locatebiome:
