Mending Enchantment Guide
Mending is one of the best enchantments in Minecraft. It keeps your tools, weapons, and armor from breaking by automatically repairing them as you gain experience. Here’s everything you need to know about getting it and using it right.
What Does Mending Do?
Mending is a Level 1 enchantment that fixes damaged gear using your XP. Every time you earn experience by killing mobs, mining blocks, fishing, or breeding animals, that experience gets split between your XP bar and repairing any Mending-enchanted items you’re holding or wearing.
The enchantment prioritizes repairing equipped items first. Any leftover XP goes straight to your experience bar like normal.
What Items Work With Mending?
Mending can be applied to almost anything that takes durability damage:
- Tools: Pickaxe, Axe, Shovel, Hoe
- Weapons: Sword, Bow, Crossbow, Trident
- Armor: Helmet, Chestplate, Leggings, Boots
- Other: Elytra, Shield, Fishing Rod, Shears, Carrot on a Stick
How to Get Mending
Enchanting Table
Use an enchanting table with bookshelves placed around it. Mending is a rare enchantment, so you might need to try the table a few times or check for enchanted books. The more bookshelves you have (up to 15), the better your odds of seeing good enchantments.
Anvil
Find an enchanted book with Mending in dungeon chests, fishing loot, or librarian trades. Put it on an anvil with your tool or armor to combine them. This is the most reliable way to get Mending if you can find the book.
Command
In Creative mode or with cheats enabled, use this command:
/enchant @p mending 1
The @p targets the nearest player. You can swap it for a specific player name.
How to Actually Use Mending
For Armor: You need to wear it. Mending won’t work if the armor piece is sitting in your inventory or a chest.
For Tools and Weapons: You need to hold them in your main hand. Offhand items get repaired too, but the item in your main hand takes priority.
Once it’s equipped or held, just play the game. Every time you get XP, the enchantment automatically kicks in and repairs your gear.
Mending vs Infinity
You can’t have both Mending and Infinity on the same bow. Infinity gives you unlimited arrows, but Mending is better long-term since you’ll never need to repair the bow. Pick whichever fits your playstyle.

Pro Tips for Mending
Get Mending early and your best gear lasts the entire game. Use your Mending pickaxe to mine and farm XP, and it repairs itself. You can keep the same set of diamond or netherite tools forever.
Fishermen and librarians are great sources for Mending books. If you find one, grab it immediately. Applying Mending to your main tools is worth the cost on the anvil.
Combine Mending with other useful enchantments like Efficiency, Unbreaking, and Sharpness. There are no conflicts, so you can stack them up for maximum effectiveness.
