The Lingering Potion of Luck is one of the more niche potions in Minecraft, but if you’re running a luck-based farm or just want the stat boost, you’ll need to know how to brew it. This guide walks you through everything you need.
What is a Lingering Potion of Luck?
A Lingering Potion of Luck (1:15) is a throwable potion that creates a cloud of luck effect. When you or a mob walks through the cloud, you get the Luck effect for 1 minute and 15 seconds, boosting your luck stat by 1. It lasts longer than a splash potion and covers an area, making it useful for mob farms and group buffs.
You can also use lingering potions to craft tipped arrows, which is clutch for applying effects at range.
What You Need to Brew It
To make a Lingering Potion of Luck, you’ll need:
- 1 Splash Potion of Luck (1:15)
- 1 Dragon’s Breath
- 1 Brewing Stand
- Blaze Powder (to fuel the stand)
The tricky part is usually getting Dragon’s Breath, which only drops from Ender Dragons. If you haven’t killed the dragon yet, you’ll need to do that first.
Brewing Steps
Step 1: Set Up Your Brewing Stand
Place down your brewing stand and open it. You should see three bottle slots at the bottom and one ingredient slot at the top.
Step 2: Add Blaze Powder
Put blaze powder in the fuel slot (the small box on the left side of the brewing stand). This powers the brewing process. One blaze powder brews up to 3 potions.
Step 3: Add Your Splash Potion
Place your Splash Potion of Luck (1:15) in any of the three bottle slots at the bottom. You can fill all three if you have multiple splash potions.
Step 4: Add Dragon’s Breath
Put the Dragon’s Breath in the ingredient slot at the top. The brewing stand will start working immediately. You’ll hear the “glug glug glug” sound and see bubbles rising through the bottles.
Step 5: Collect Your Potion
When the brewing finishes, the Dragon’s Breath disappears and you’re left with Lingering Potions of Luck. Grab them and you’re done.
Hover over the potion if you want to verify you got the right one. You should see the effect name and duration.
Finding It in Creative Mode
If you just want to grab one in Creative, here’s where to find it:
- Minecraft 1.9 through 1.19: Brewing tab
- Minecraft 1.19.3 and 1.20+: Food & Drinks tab
Commands
If you’re running commands, use these for different versions:
Minecraft 1.13+:
/give @p lingering_potion{Potion:"minecraft:luck"} 1
Minecraft 1.9 to 1.12:
/give @p lingering_potion 1 0 {Potion:"minecraft:luck"}
What Can You Do With It?
Throw it on the ground and it creates a cloud that applies Luck to anything nearby. This is great for:
- Boosting loot drops on mob farms
- Setting up luck stations in multiplayer
- Making tipped arrows by combining it with arrows on a crafting table
The cloud stays for about 30 seconds and will drift with wind if that’s enabled.
