Learn how to craft a Letter X banner in Minecraft with this quick guide. You’ll use the loom to combine patterns and create a decorative banner that displays a large X. Use it as a flag or to customize a shield.

Materials You’ll Need

To make a Letter X banner, gather these items:

  • 1 White Banner
  • 2 Black Dye
  • 1 White Dye

Pro tip: Want a different color X? Swap the black dye for any other dye instead. Use red dye, blue dye, or whatever color you want. The white dye stays the same for the final border.

Crafting Steps

Step 1: Open the Loom

Right-click a loom to open it. You’ll see three slots where you can place your banner, dye, and an optional pattern.

Step 2: Add Black Bend Pattern

Place the white banner in the left slot and black dye in the middle slot. Look through the pattern list for “Bend” and select it. This creates a diagonal line on your banner. Move the banner to your inventory.

Step 3: Add Black Bend Sinister Pattern

Take the banner from step 2 and place it back in the loom. Add black dye again. Select “Bend Sinister” from the pattern list. This adds another diagonal line, creating an X shape. Move it back to your inventory.

Step 4: Add White Bordure Pattern

Place the banner from step 3 in the loom one more time. This time use white dye instead of black. Select “Bordure” from the pattern list to add a white border around the edges. This finishes the Letter X design.

Step 5: Collect Your Banner

Take the completed Letter X banner from the loom. You now have a finished banner ready to use.

Using Your Letter X Banner

Your banner can be placed on walls as decoration or attached to a shield for customization. You can also combine multiple banners together by placing them in the crafting grid to create larger displays.

Other Banner Designs

Once you master the Letter X, you can craft banners for other letters and decorative patterns. Try making solid colored banners, striped designs, or custom letter banners for each letter of the alphabet.

Version Support

Banners have been in Minecraft Java Edition since version 1.12. The loom was added in version 1.14. Both are included in all modern versions of Minecraft.
