Gravel is one of the most common blocks you’ll run into in Minecraft. You can’t craft it, but you can find it all over the place and mine it pretty quickly. Here’s everything you need to know about getting gravel in survival mode and using it.
Where to Find Gravel
Gravel shows up in tons of places in Minecraft. You’ll find it:
- In the sides and bottom of mountains and hills
- Near water sources like beaches, oceans, and underwater
- In the Nether, scattered around lava lakes
- In desert biomes, often mixed with sand
- In ravines and caves
- In the End on islands
If you’re having trouble finding gravel, dig down into hillsides or look near water. You’ll stumble across it pretty fast.
How to Mine Gravel
What You Need
You can mine gravel with your bare hand, but it’s way faster to use a shovel. Any shovel works, but here’s the breakdown:
- Diamond Shovel: Fastest, most durable
- Iron Shovel: Good balance of speed and durability
- Stone Shovel: Basic option, works fine
- Golden Shovel: Not worth it, breaks too fast
- Wooden Shovel: Slowest, but free if you have wood
Mining Instructions by Platform
Java Edition (PC/Mac): Left click and hold on the gravel block until it breaks.
Bedrock Edition (Windows 10/11, Nintendo Switch, PS4/PS5, Xbox): Tap and hold on the gravel block (or hold RT on console controllers).
Pocket Edition (Mobile): Tap and hold the gravel block.
Console Specifics:
- Xbox 360 and Xbox One: Press and hold RT
- PlayStation 3 and PS4: Press and hold R2
- Wii U: Press and hold ZR
- Nintendo Switch: Press and hold ZR
After Mining
When the block breaks, gravel sometimes drops as an item you can pick up. But here’s the thing: gravel sometimes drops flint instead, so you might get flint rather than gravel. Either way, make sure you grab it before it despawns.

What to Make with Gravel
Gravel is useful for a few things:
- Coarse Dirt: Mix gravel with dirt 2:2
- Concrete Powder (all colors): Combine gravel, sand, and dye
- Concrete (all colors): Drop the powder into water
- Building material: Gravel looks good for certain builds
The main use is making concrete powder, which you’ll need if you’re doing any large building projects.
