This mod makes it possible.

The basic idea is a progression chain. Gather some starting organic material (leaves, saplings, plants). Throw them in a Barrel and compost them into Dirt. Then you can sieve the Dirt to get Grass seeds and Stone. Put 4 Stone together for Cobblestone. Hit Cobblestone with a Hammer to get Gravel. Sieve the Gravel or hammer it again to get Sand. Keep going: sieve Sand for more items, hammer it for Dust. Each step opens up new possibilities.

How the Mod Works
