Calcite – Where to Find & Mine in Minecraft

Find calcite in Minecraft geodes. Learn where to locate them, what tools you need, and how to mine them in survival mode.

Calcite is a light gray decorative block found inside amethyst geodes deep underground. It was added in the Caves & Cliffs update and can only be obtained by mining it from natural formations. This guide shows you exactly where to find calcite and how to collect it.

What is Calcite?

Calcite is a white/light gray building block that forms the middle layer of amethyst geodes. You can’t craft it, so mining it in the wild is your only option in survival mode. It stacks up to 64 and works great for building clean, natural-looking structures.

Where to Find Calcite

In Creative Mode

The easiest way to grab calcite is creative mode. You’ll find it in:

  • Versions 1.17-1.19: Building Blocks tab
  • Version 1.19.3+: Natural Blocks tab

How to Get Calcite in Survival Mode

Step 1: Find an Amethyst Geode

Calcite only spawns in amethyst geodes. These are underground formations found in the Overworld, usually deep underground or at the end of cave systems. They’re fairly rare, so you might need to do some exploring to find one.

Each geode has three layers. The outer layer is rough tuff, the middle layer is calcite, and the inner layer has budding amethyst and amethyst clusters in various growth stages.

Step 2: Get a Pickaxe

You need a pickaxe to mine calcite. Any pickaxe works (stone, iron, diamond, netherite, or golden). Your hand or other tools won’t break it and drop the block.

Step 3: Mine the Calcite

Once you find the geode, break the calcite blocks with your pickaxe. The controls depend on your platform:

  • Java Edition (PC/Mac): Left-click and hold
  • Pocket Edition (PE): Tap and hold
  • Xbox One: Hold RT
  • PlayStation 4: Hold R2
  • Nintendo Switch: Hold ZR
  • Windows 10 Edition: Left-click and hold

Step 4: Pick It Up

The calcite drops as an item. Walk over it to add it to your inventory. It stacks up to 64 per slot.

Calcite Command and ID

The Minecraft ID for calcite is minecraft:calcite. To give yourself calcite in creative or with commands, use:

/give @p calcite 1

Change the 1 to however many blocks you want.

Version Support

Calcite is available in Java Edition versions 1.17 through 1.19.3 and all newer versions. It first appeared in the Caves & Cliffs: Part I update.
