BuildCraft is the ultimate automation mod for Minecraft. It adds a complete system of pipes, machines, and power generation that lets you automate mining, crafting, pumping, and building. If you want your base to run itself, BuildCraft is where you start.

What You Get with BuildCraft

Pipes – The Heart of BuildCraft

Pipes transport items, liquids, and power between your machines and storage. BuildCraft has eight different pipe types, each with its own purpose:

  • Wooden Pipes – Extract items from inventories. Need a Redstone Engine or better to function.
  • Cobblestone Pipes – Basic transport. Items slow down over long distances but they’re cheap to make.
  • Stone Pipes – Better than cobblestone with less drag. Won’t connect to cobblestone pipes.
  • Sandstone Pipes – Won’t connect to machines. Useful for running pipes behind things you don’t want to connect to your network.
  • Iron Pipes – One-way pipes. Items enter from any side but only exit one direction. Perfect for multiple machines feeding the same place.
  • Golden Pipes – Speed up items flowing through them. Golden fluid pipes hold more liquid per segment.
  • Diamond Pipes – Advanced sorting pipes. Right-click to color-code items for routing. Items automatically go to the right place.
  • Emerald and Obsidian Pipes – High-end pipes with specialized functions for complex networks.

Machines That Do the Work

BuildCraft machines automate the grind. Power them with engines and they’ll handle the rest:

  • Quarry – Mine entire areas automatically down to bedrock. Outputs everything into pipes connected to it.
  • Mining Well – Digs straight down. Used with a Pump to pull liquids from above.
  • Pump – Pulls liquids from the world and pumps them through pipes. Waterproof pipes required.
  • Autocrafting Table – Craft items automatically. Give it a recipe and materials, and it outputs finished products.
  • Refinery – Convert crude oil into fuel. Fuel burns longer in Combustion Engines than raw oil.
  • Tank – Store liquids like water, lava, oil, and fuel. Stack them for massive storage.
  • Filler – Fill or flatten areas based on patterns you define in its GUI.
  • Builder – Construct structures from blueprints. Scans inventories for needed blocks.

Engines and Power Generation

BuildCraft uses MJ (Minecraft Joules) as its power unit. Different engines produce different amounts:

  • Redstone Engine – Minimal power. Only good for pumps and wooden pipes. Won’t add up to anything useful even in large numbers.
  • Stirling Engine – Produces 1 MJ/t steady. Runs on coal, wood, and lava buckets. Reliable and easy to fuel. Great for starting out.
  • Combustion Engine – Variable output depending on fuel. Reaches 6 MJ/t when running on fuel, but needs water cooling or it explodes.

Gates and Automation Logic

Gates let you create conditional logic for your machines. They detect engine heat, inventory levels, power storage, item flow, and redstone signals. Use them to turn machines on/off or redirect items based on conditions.

Gears and Crafting

Gears are the building blocks for BuildCraft machines. They come in five tiers, each more advanced than the last. You’ll need them to craft everything from engines to quarries.

How to Install BuildCraft

BuildCraft requires Minecraft Forge for your specific version. Here’s what to do:

  1. Install Minecraft Forge matching your Minecraft version.
  2. Download the BuildCraft mod file for your version.
  3. Place the .jar file in your .minecraft/mods folder.
  4. Launch Minecraft with Forge selected as your profile.

Mod Compatibility

BuildCraft works well with most other mods. It’s designed to integrate with mods like Thermal Expansion, Forestry, and Railcraft. Some mods add their own engines and tools that work with BuildCraft’s pipe system. Always check individual mod descriptions for known conflicts.

Crafting Recipes

BuildCraft has dozens of crafting recipes. Install Just Enough Items (Forge) or Roughly Enough Items (Fabric) to view all recipes directly in-game.
