A bucket of cod is a water bucket containing a live cod fish. You can’t craft it, but you can catch one by using a water bucket on a cod. This guide covers all the ways to get one in both Creative and Survival mode across all Minecraft versions.
What is a Bucket of Cod?
A bucket of cod holds a living cod fish. The fish inside stays alive, so you can transport it anywhere or release it later. It’s the only way to move cod between locations in Survival mode. You can also pour it out to create a water source with the cod still inside.
Finding in Creative Mode

Open your Creative inventory and find the bucket of cod in these locations:
- Versions 1.13 to 1.19: Miscellaneous tab
- Versions 1.19.3 to 1.19.4+: Tools & Utilities tab
Bedrock Edition
Search for “bucket of cod” in the Creative inventory or find it in the Nature tab.
