Arrow of Poison (0:11) Crafting Guide – Minecraft

Learn how to craft Arrows of Poison in Minecraft with this step-by-step guide. Includes recipes, materials, and commands for Java Edition.

Arrows of Poison pack extra punch. When you hit a mob or player with one, they get poisoned for 11 seconds. They’re useful for taking down tougher enemies, and crafting them is pretty straightforward once you have the right materials.

What You Need to Craft Arrows of Poison

To make Arrows of Poison (0:11), you’ll need:

  • 8 Arrows
  • 1 Lingering Potion of Poison (0:22)

This crafting recipe makes 8 poison arrows at once, so you get a decent batch. The lingering potion is the key ingredient here. You can make lingering potions by combining regular potions with dragon’s breath.

How to Craft Arrows of Poison

Step 1: Open Your Crafting Table

Set up your 3×3 crafting grid. You’ll see an empty grid ready for items.

Step 2: Place the Ingredients

Arrange your materials exactly like this:

  • Top row: 3 arrows
  • Middle row: arrow, lingering potion of poison, arrow
  • Bottom row: 3 arrows

The lingering potion goes in the center slot. This pattern is important. Once you place everything correctly, 8 Arrows of Poison will show up on the right side of the crafting menu.

Step 3: Move to Your Inventory

Click the arrows to grab them and move them into your inventory. Done. You’ve got poison arrows ready to use.

Finding in Creative Mode

If you’re in Creative Mode, you can just grab these from the Combat tab in your inventory.

Minecraft Versions and Compatibility

Arrows of Poison work in Minecraft Java Edition from version 1.9 all the way through 1.20. They’re available in the same way across all these versions. Bedrock Edition has similar mechanics but uses a different crafting system.

In Minecraft Education Edition, the poison effect lasts 15 seconds instead of 11, so the timing is slightly different.

Item ID and Commands

Java Edition 1.13 and Later

Use this command to give yourself a poison arrow:

/give @p tipped_arrow{Potion:"minecraft:long_poison"} 1

Java Edition 1.9 to 1.12

Older versions use this format:

/give @p tipped_arrow 1 0 {Potion:"minecraft:long_poison"}

The item ID is minecraft:tipped_arrow in all modern versions.

Tips for Using Poison Arrows

  • Poison arrows stack up to 64, so you can carry a bunch at once
  • They work best with a power bow to deal extra damage
  • Poison doesn’t kill mobs on its own (unlike in older versions) but it damages them over time
  • Use them on tough mobs like witches or stronger enemies to wear them down
  • The poison effect stacks if you hit the same target multiple times quickly
