What is Ancient Debris?
Ancient debris is one of the rarest blocks in Minecraft. You can’t craft it. You can’t get it from a furnace. You have to find it yourself, deep in the Nether. Once you grab some, you can turn it into Netherite scrap, which leads to some of the best gear in the game.
Where to Find Ancient Debris
Ancient debris only spawns in the Nether, and it doesn’t show up just anywhere. You need to dig deep. Look for it between Y coordinates 12 and 21. The lower you go, the more likely you’ll find it.
It shows up as dark brown or grayish blocks mixed in with netherrack. Honestly, it’s easy to miss if you’re not paying attention. Mine everything that looks slightly off, and you’ll find it eventually.
What Pickaxe You Need
This is important: you need at least a diamond pickaxe. An iron pickaxe or anything weaker won’t work. A netherite pickaxe is even better and will mine it faster, but diamond works fine.
If you try to mine ancient debris with stone, iron, or a wooden pickaxe, you’re wasting your time. The block won’t drop.
How to Mine It
Once you’ve found ancient debris, the mining process depends on what you’re playing on:
- Java Edition (PC/Mac): Left click and hold on the block
- Pocket Edition: Tap and hold on the block
- Xbox One: Hold RT button
- PS4: Hold R2 button
- Nintendo Switch: Hold ZR button
- Windows 10/11 Edition: Left click and hold
Keep holding until the block breaks. A smaller item drop will appear on the ground. Pick it up before it disappears.
What to Do With Ancient Debris
You can’t use ancient debris directly for much. What you really want is to smelt it in a furnace to get Netherite scrap. Combine Netherite scrap with gold in a smithing table, and you get Netherite gear.
This is the progression: Ancient Debris > Netherite Scrap > Netherite Ingot (using smithing table) > Netherite Tools & Armor
Creative Mode Location
If you’re playing in Creative Mode and just want to grab some ancient debris, it’s in the inventory menu under Building Blocks (Java Edition 1.16-1.19) or Natural Blocks (1.19.3+).
